Hegen teats are designed to encourage seamless transition from breast to bottle feeding, minimising nipple confusion for baby.
The soft, elliptical shaped teat closely mimics a mother's lactating breast, while the off-centre teat design promotes upright feeding, similar to a position in which babies are nursed.
The built in anti-colic air vent reduces unwanted air intake and prevents bubbling of milk, saving nutrients from oxidation.
Sizes:
- Extra Slow Flow Teat is suitable for use from birth, even for premature or low birth weight babies, as it mimics the initial flow of transitional breast milk - “0”
- Slow Flow Teat is suitable for use from the first month, as it mimics the initial slow flow of breast milk - “1”
- Medium Flow Teat is suitable for use from the third month, as it gradually increases the milk flow rate as babies develop their ability to coordinate both the suckling and swallowing reflex - “2”
- Fast Flow Teat is suitable for use from the sixth month - “3”
- Thick Feed Teat is suitable for thick or semi-solid feeds (e.g. milk with added cereal or rice powder) during the sixth month weaning stage, the teat has a special Y cut which allows for an extra fast flow - “Y”
In order to identify the teat being used, look for the number embossed on the right-hand corner of the teat beside the anti-colic vent. The number will indicate the type of flow the teat is based on, as indicated above.
Note - All Hegen teats only have one hole - flow rate of each teat is determined by the size of the hole.
Choosing teat sizes:
The above age ranges can be used as a general guide for introducing a suitable teat, however if you observe any of the following, adjust the size offered accordingly.
Upsize the teal level when baby:
- Becomes fussy or irritated while drinking
- Takes longer to finish drinking
- Falls asleep mid-feed
- Chews or tugs the teat
Downgrade the teat level when baby:
- Chokes or coughs
- Gulps or swallows hard (regurgitates)
- Let milk overflow from side of mouth
- Refuses the bottle
Care:
- Before first use, wash with undiluted baby bottle detergent and rinse in clean water thoroughly before sterilising
- Thoroughly wash and clean the teats (includes the crevices) to remove all forms of milk
- Silicone parts are only able to withstand up to 110°C - please check that any steriliser does not exceed the above temperature range
